چکیده

The syndrome of severe wasting, opisthotonus and paraplegia in flexion associated with considerable hydrocephalus is well known to those treating advanced cases of tuberculous meningitis. Once such a condition has developed, the outlook is generally poor. Many patients will die and the survivors will often be handicapped by a variety of physical and mental sequelae. The purpose of this paper is to describe and discuss a serious complication of tuberculous meningitis which does not seem to have been described before. This consists of ectopic ossification. It only occurred in children with spinal block and paraplegia. During 1950 and 1951 the Tuberculous Meningitis Unit of the Department of Child Health in Sheffield admitted 10 children who developed paraplegia and survived for a minimum period of three months. Ectopic ossification was observed in five of these 10 children, four of whom survived and are alive 16 to 33 months after the onset of meningitis.

مقایسه غلظت آدنوزین‌دآمیناز مایع مغزی‌نخاعی در بیماران مننژیت سلی و غیر سلی

Background and Aim: Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis is difficult because of its non-specific clinical presentations which may be confused with other disorders of central nervous system. The initiation of anti-TB medication can often be delayed because of lack of available laboratory tests. This study was aimed at evaluating the adenosine deaminase (ADA) concentration in differentiating tube...

Reversible ectopic soft tissue ossification following measles encephalomyelitis.

For many years it has been recognized that changes may take place in the skeletal bony and soft tissues in paraplegic patients. Madame Dejerine and her co-workers described such changes in 1918 and 1919 (Dejerine and Ceillier, 1918; D1jerine, Ceillier and Dejerine, 1919). War injuries, road and industrial accidents have been responsible for an increased number of paraplegic patients, many of wh...

EVALUATION OF DIRECT MICROSCOPY, CULTURE, AND POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF TUBERCULOUS MENINGITIS

In view of the importance of early diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM), the efficiency of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), one of the most reliable and sensitive DNA-based assays, was compared with conventional methods (acid-fast microscopy and culture) for the detection of M. tuberculosis in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from patients suspected of TBM. Of the 29 CSF specim...

Heterotopic ossification in a patient with tuberculous meningoencephalitis.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the deposition of mature lamellar bone in soft tissue (1). Herein, we present the case of HO due to tuberculous meningitis (TBM) with specific concern on the role of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the diagnosis. A 27-year-old man was diagnosed with TBM. During the follow-up antituberculosis therapy had to be stopped twice for a one-week period due to hepatotoxici...
